Origin and Fate of Dust in Our Universe

Gothenburg, Sweden

25th - 29th September 2023

Within our collaboration on Cosmic Dust, funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg foundation (https://cosmic-dust.se/about), we are organizing a conference in Gothenburg (25th-29th September 2023) on dust, near and far.

Dust grains play a crucial role in many astrophysical processes, from the formation of stars and planets to the evolution of galaxies. However, despite the fundamental importance of interstellar dust, many questions remain regarding its formation, growth, and destruction throughout the Universe. To address these questions, we are pleased to announce the upcoming conference on interstellar dust. This event aims to bring together researchers from diverse backgrounds, including those working on theory, experiments, and observations of dust formation, growth, and destruction in order to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of research in this field.

The conference will feature presentations on the latest theoretical and laboratory research, as well as the most recent observations from instruments such as the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). Through these presentations, attendees will gain insights into the latest developments in the field and have the opportunity to discuss new ideas and collaborate with other researchers.

In addition, the conference will provide a platform for interdisciplinary collaborations that can provide answers to the many questions that remain related to astrophysical dust on all scales and all environments. By bringing together researchers from a range of backgrounds, the conference aims to spark new collaborations and ideas that can drive important advances in our understanding of the role that interstellar dust plays in shaping the Universe.

Overall, the conference on interstellar dust promises to be an exciting and valuable event for researchers in this field. We hope that attendees will leave the conference with a deeper understanding of the current state of research in interstellar dust and with new ideas for future research directions.

From a practical point of view, this conference is structured around four different thematics:
  1. Dust properties
  2. Dust formation
  3. Dust growth
  4. Dust destruction
